METROPOLITAN MAGAZINE started out as a sophisticated monthly aimed at the in-crowd — New York City theater-goers — and the wannabe in-crowd. In its several decades of existence, it went through many different stages, at one point announcing that it intended to appeal to all readers, and at another running a succession of art nouveau covers based on Mucha paintings. In its final decade it specialized in fiction aimed at women; in the late 1920's it was sold, and was published for its final two years as MACFADDEN'S FICTION-LOVER'S MAGAZINE.
