Scientific American 1908-07-25
A 2000 foot building -- the maximum possible height under existing conditions. The building code of New York City allows a maximum foundation pressure of 15 tons per square foot. Without exceeding this, it wold be possible to erect on a lot 200 feet square the massive building shown above. It is 2000 feet high; weighs 516,500 tons; would cost $60,000,000. The wind pressure would be 6000 tons. It would take eight times this pressure to overturn the structure. Storm King Mountain, Singer Building, Metropolitan Building, Lusitania, Eiffel Tower, Washington Monument, Equitable building, St. Peter's, Rome.
